Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on 4 April 1972 at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. The family was dominated by her grandmother, and she was a sole child. Scott was a graduate of The Philadelphia High School for Girls. She then enrolled at Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education as well as working two different job. She hoped to become an high school English teacher. The dream, however was in vain when she left the college after a year of study and became an aide to teachers. The path she took to her career started as a spoken-word performer who performed her work in live poetry readings. Her next collaboration was to Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. The singer was at the Roots performance. In the following years, she managed to negotiate collaborations with people like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common.
